The group “Something Else” walked away with first prize in
the first Annual Battle of the Teenage Bands at the Canadian Bass
Championship Sunday night, but the real winners were those in
attendance. “The music was just excellent,” said organizer
June Caul. “The kids really loved the music and the crowd
participation was also very good.”
Despite threatening skies, over 300 fans and followers crowded under
the huge dome tent at the Sort Gap Marina to take in the Rock ‘n
Roll music and the Much Music Dance Party (above). The event was part
of the plan to provide more activities for teenagers at the Canadian
Bass Championship. Directors Diane Maxey and June Caul have introduced
an expanded slate of activities at the community festival which will be
of interest to the entire family.
Band members of “Something Else” are: Cody McCool and
Patrick Bobczinski on guitar, Zack McCool on drums, Ryan Shortreed
vocal and Dayton Brown on base. The McCools, Shortreed and Brown were
also awarded ‘Best in Their Class’ by the judges.
Amazingly, all members of the group have just graduated from grade
eight and all of the pieces they played were written by the group.
The second and third place bands were “Remaining Wing” from
Fort Frances and “Counting Zero” from Rainy River.
